Padua: Unesco heritage
Padua has been a Unesco heritage site since 1997 thanks to its Botanical Garden, and since 2021 the Cycle of 14th-Century Frescoes widely located in the historic center has also been included in the Unesco World Heritage list.
It is home to a prestigious and ancient University, boasts numerous testimonies of a glorious cultural and artistic past (Palazzo della Ragione, Caffè Pedrocchi), which make it a destination for tourists from all over the world. It preserves one of the most extraordinary and revolutionary masterpieces of medieval art, the Scrovegni Chapel, illustrated at the beginning of the fourteenth century by Giotto.
It is also universally known as the city of Sant'Antonio, the famous Portuguese Franciscan, born in Lisbon in 1195, who lived in Padua for some years and died there (June 13, 1231). The saint's remains are kept in the Basilica of Sant'Antonio, the destination of numerous pilgrims from all over the world and one of the main monuments of the city. The Taming of the Shrew, a comedy by William Shakespeare, is set in Padua.
The Euganean Hills stand out unexpectedly in the heart of the Veneto plain with their unmistakable conical volumes, the result of volcanic phenomena dating back over 40 million years ago.
